When swimers are choosen by region it happens exactly this. The 10th swimmer in thje USA or France is much better than Moussambani, however why is not at the games? Because swimmers are choosen by region! Wrong method of choice!

that first 50m is still a very decent time

Would be great to see him again in 2012! Wikipedia tells me that his best time now is 57 seconds, which is almost 1 minute faster than in this heat. Come on Eric, don't let me down! :)

don't forget to mention, that before he came to the olympics he had never even seen a 50 meter pool. he started swimming only 8 months prior and was training in a hotel pool. he made it to the olympics by drawing a wildcard to encourage developing countries. i think this guy embodies the spirit of the olympics and sports.
