Selenium, a supplement that is taken by 1% of the population may raise the risk for developing diabetes. In an 8-year study researchers noted a 55% increase in diabetes in those taking the supplement.

From Washington

The house of Representatives has voted overwhelmingly to give more power to the FDA. In an attempt to prevent another Vioxx-like catastrophe, the house is hoping the FDA will have more say in how drugs are evaluated after hitting the market.

From Basel

Novartis has received FDA approval for a patch to treat Alzheimer's disease. The patch contains Exelon, and avoids the GI side effects seen when the drug is given by mouth.

And finally from Vancouver

Lightning storm + iPod = bad iDea. An unfortunate man ended up with ruptured ear drums, second degree burns and multiple jaw fractures while being hit by lightening and listening to an iPod. Meteorologists recommend, "When you hear the roar, get indoors."
