It does get exciting when, on a long term project like this, you finally start seeing it coming together. On a smaller scale, the total replacement of my kitchen, which has been a learn as you go project, is finally starting to turn into the dream I had when I started it, and that sparks my enthusiasm. The countertop has been in limbo, partly because I need to get the last base cabinets in place first, and partly because it's an enormous expense. I've been wondering IF I can build it myself.

@anmoose The only part you can't do yourself is the roled splash. If you dont mind having a flat square corner splash they are easy. You do need a router for cutting though...

Well, I'm looking at around $800 to have it made, so I wouldn't rule out buying a router. It's about the only tool I *don't* have. What do you mean by a rolled splash? The backsplash? With a rounded top edge?

@anmoose That and the inside corner at the back. It requires a lot of pressure and heat. If you just box the splash in without the rolling its easy. There is a special router bit for cutting. You can look up making your own counter tops on You Tube I bet.

@mobiltec Yer welcome... Remember when I used a router on the cabinet faces in the Deville? Same type of cutting with a roller bearing as the guide. Pretty simple. Glues down with contact cement. Watch the tutorials for the tricks of setting the formica onto the top with ease.... Then the router cuts the waste off with ease. Perfect. You'll save a ton.

@larryboy8821 The Orange Empire Railroad Museum is just a few blocks away. They have lots of different types of trains there including an old steam locomotive. I need to go over there and shoot a video sometime.

I thought that's what you meant. I'm not much for round, but I've seen some modern designs with a beveled edge that looks really classy, so that's the direction I was heading. Now that you got me all fired up, I *did* do a quick search on YT, and came up with a list of tutorials and a couple of websites already! I have about 20 linear feet of counter, and I'm already starting to think I *can* do this myself, and for less than half of having it done. Thanks for the kickstart!!
