I heard this song sung acapella a week ago by "Lonesome" Will Mullins (see his videos on YouTube) and was so moved by Will's rendition. I sure can't do it like Will or Ralph Stanley, who I think recorded it years ago, but here it is ...hope you as moved by the words as I was. This is my first attempt at singing anything without music to cover up my mistakes.
GONE AWAY WITH A FRIEND I looked into the face of an old saint of God, I thought your race has ended, your lifes crown youve won. Separated for the present but soon to live again and hes (she's) only gone away with a friend.
Chorus:
Gone away with a friend, someone closer than a brother, someone who loves you more than children, dad, or mother. He holds you very close in the palm of his hand, let it read on my tomb stone, gone away with a friend.
Now, hes my constant companion, through life's joy and lifes pain, all my hopes and my cares, I hold in His dear name. And when my soul breaks free from the chains that hold me here, Im gone away with Jesus, no greater friend so dear.
Gone away with a friend, someone closer than a brother, someone who loves you more than children, dad, or mother. He holds you very close in the palm of his hand, let it read on my tomb stone, gone away with a friend.
