you know, like they'd always try harder with their craft, but it seems like John was usually the mainstay of the group when they played and you can see this in the old footage, listen to it on the old tapes and demos.
John was right about Pete, though, he was a good guitarist.

sort of see how limitations in recording and audience participation affected their performances. i read Keith used to get really impatient about having to hold back on the drums, but Pete sometimes looks like he didn't get the results he wanted from his guitars and amps

yeah, that's what i said about Keith's drumming, too, "spot-on"; in fact, some of their old session work and club appearances on bootlegs turned up on YT, and you can hear some real control in musicianship from Keith, Pete and John at times.
this clip is amazing, it shows a few things like how Pete and Roger could share the same mike and how Keith could get really loosey-goosey with his sticks (and hold onto them).
