INTERVIEWER - Good evening, Mané Garrincha, Brazilian National Team forward of World Cups 58/62/66.
GARRINCHA - Good evening.
INTERVIEWER - Please, in a few words, describe Garricha by yourself...
GARRINCHA - I'm this man... I've never change my personality... I've been a guy full of joy... always playing as kid... I'm this way... I've never forget the kind of man I was before and after (my career).
INTERVIEWER - Today you're a very special guest of "Vox Populi"
GARRINCHA - Thanks.
1st FAN QUESTION - Garrincha, at what age and at what club you begin your pro career?
GARRINCHA - I've started my career in 1953 playing for Rio's Botafogo, at the age of 18.
2nd FAN QUESTION - Hello, Garrincha, I'd know who gave your nickname "Garrincha" and why?
GARRINCHA - My brother gave me this nickname. That's because as a little boy I used to hunt a kind of bird who is called "Garrincha". Someday, my brother watched me doing a "cowardness" with the bird I've just hunted, so he said... "Manuel, from now and forever your name will be Garrincha".
3rd FAN QUESTION - Garrincha, you've got curved legs because you likes hidding a horse or that's a consequence of your style of playing?
GARRINCHA - No... I've got curved legs due to a genetic heritage... Indeed, my father also got curved legs like mine and my two-year-old son as well.
If the boy will be a great footballer because of that... I don't know... but he also gets curved legs.
INTERVIEWER - Garrincha, do you think your so characteristic curved legs helped you to play football or that's a journalists story?
GARRINCHA - Well... When I was younger and I used to play amateur football in my hometown, Pau Grande, in Rio's countryside - I've never notice nothing about it. Playing for Botafogo, a big club in Brazil, however, journalists seem to paid atention on that characterist.
But I think that characteristic helped me a lot, because as the "gringos" thought: "Look this guy and his curved legs... he doesn't seem to play a good footballl", I simply played football showing my skills, scoring goals and giving assists. This way, I've turned the kind of player I am... with this characterist: curverd legs I do.
INTERVIEWER asks Garrincha about his commonly playing as a right-wing forward and what thought his coaches about it.
GARRINCHA - ... Obviously I've usually got instructions/recommendations from my coaches, but because of my way of playing the game, I've always obeyed myself, because I had a proper characteristic, a "right playing" that everybody liked it and was a dangerous for the rivals. So, I think the coaches couldn't criticize my 'joga bonito' playing. Otherwise, they recommended me keeping dribbling and oing always towards to the opposite guard, because they were sure that's the best for ourt team.
INTERVIEWER - What was your "right playing"?
GARRINCHA - I've always played by the right of the field and targetting the goal-line.
4th FAN QUESTION - I would like to know why you suddenly disappeared... nobody has never heard about you anymore...
GARRINCHA - Well, I really vanished from news and TV because a former player, as retired one, he prefers be quiet in his haven... In my case, I really don't like living a public life. I prefer stay at home, be alone, being free....
But I don't think I've vanished at all... I've been visiting São Paulo and playing amateur matches here... Of course it seems I disappered, 'cause I'm not a pro footballer anymore. Nowadays, I'm a football fan, like you.
5th FAN QUESTION - Do you think would you be so a successful as a footballer as you did in the 50/60's playing as the same way in 1978 football style?
GARRINCHA - Considering the tatics, the schemes, and the way football is played in this end of this decade, I think it would be easily for me.
That's because I cant' believe the defenders would let me alone, if they know my skills of speed and dribbling...
So, I think playing these days in club derbies or National Teams matches would be easier for me, because probably opponent squads would'n play with a specific defender on me. That's was more difficult in the past.

He talks about the reason why he's named Garrincha, which is on account of a bird whose name was Garrincha. He used to trap this bird and torture it. His brother nicknamed him after the bird. He also speaks of his twisted legs. He says his father as well his son got them twisted the same way. "Nowadays I'm only a spectator, no longer a player"

Pena que eu não viví nessa época,más quando eu assisto esse Vox Populi,me faz lembrar os meus antigos vizinhos,que tal qual,eu falei sobre eles na abertura da novela Xeque Mate,da extinta TV Tupi,as vezes,a tristeza bate em mim quando eu vejo esses programas que marcaram época.
