China Red Sandalwood Museum is specialized in making and exhibiting excellent replicated furniture that was kept in the Palace Museum. There are mainly two wood materials that are used to make the furniture, namely, red sandalwood and Helimu. In fact, the furniture industry came into being in the Song and Yuan dynasties and fully developed since Ming Dynasty. The chairs in Ming dynasty can be categorized into three types; armchair, round-backed chair, official hat armchair and they all adopted Heliwu wood. But in the Qing Dynasty, it was gradually replaced by Red Sandalwood. And the reasons are to be revealed in the next episode of this program.

The reasons why Heliwu wood became popular are as follows: 1) Deforestation of red sandalwood in the Ming Dynasty and the long growth cycle of it. 2) The introduction of glasses from Europe. Compared with the furniture in Ming Dynasty, the furniture in Qing greatly changed in its design and enrichment of decorations. It is an improvement and it is a millstone in furniture-making skills. Even today, the furniture exhibited is of great value to us.
