What something "means" technically would be a definition as assigned by Webster or the like. However, if something has a personnal impact OR is MADE UP, it differs: example, my dog got run over by a speeding red truck so if I see a speeding red truck it "means" pain/anger to me (I cry). That same speeding red truck could "mean" fun/excitement for the 16 yr old driver and girlfriend, a fond first date memory (they smile).
