Film Description: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in director Marc Webb's wry, nonlinear romantic comedy about a man who falls head over heels for a woman who doesn't believe in love. Tom (Gordon-Levitt) is an aspiring architect who currently earns his living as a greeting card writer. The movie wasn't about feeling bad for the guy. The movie is about the guy realizing that he was objectifying and idealizing a girl he could never have and that he is fairly pathetic. Joseph Gordon-Levitt says it in an interview.

While I totally see what you are saying I think it is not necessarily gender specific. We all have this fantasy about how love and relationships work. When you are young and naive we think things like soul mates, love at first sight and destined loved ones are real. Once you realize it is not it is a very rude awakening. The thing I love about this movie is that is how relationships work either someone is Tom or a Summer. Summer loved Tom but she was not in love with him big difference.
