Loved Ones Bid Farewell To Former NYPD Detective Who Worked At WTC Site, GOP VETO

12/09/2010 A solemn funeral service, punctuated by humor and laughter, was held Thursday for a retired police detective who died this weekend from illnesses developed after working at the World Trade Center site.

Family and friends said goodbye to 46-year-old Kevin Czartoryski at Saint Raphael's Roman Catholic Church in Long Island City.

His coffin was draped in the colors of the New York City Police Department.

Czartoryski spent time helping transport remains to the morgue after the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, and later worked on assisting the press in the department's public information office.

Openly gay, Czartoryski was also Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's personal liaison to the LGBT community.

He was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, and eventually developed lung cancer.

His best friend described his outgoing nature.

"I met Kevin through a mutual friend Aidan, who was a friend of Kevin's from the Polish folk dancing group. You heard me right -- a Polish folk dancing group. And I hear he was pretty good," said Peter Villapl during the eulogy.

The Detective Endowment Fund classified the detective's death as being 9/11-related, but since the medical examiner wants to do more tests on his cause of death, Czartoryski can't be listed on the 9/11 registry at this time.
