Holler Stomp (Blue Note 12) by Pete Johnson on unaccompanied piano.
12-inch 78rpm recorded on Dec. 19. 1939.

Played at the Jazz 78rpm concert (with portable acoustic phonograph player, aka Gramophone or Phonograph player) at the Minton Cafe, Nishi-Ogikubo, Tokyo, Japan.

On that night, two portable acoustic players were ready to play 12-inch 78rpm of various labels such as Blue Note, Commodore, Asch, Mercury and some more. A selection by the DJ that night, Kobayashi-san, who is a professional Jazz bassist!

Look at that old man, Fukumoto-san, an owner of this cafe, spinning a lever of another player, in order to wind-up spring which drives the turntable actually!

We enjoyed dozens of Jazz 78rpms - it was such a joyful night.

  • don't ruin such a good record with steel needles

  • He-he, the 78rpm is not mine :)

If I was requested to play my own 78rpms with acoustic player, I would gladly refuse :-P

  • fab sound

  • never knew a 78rpm concert existed. looks cool

  • As long as you keep the needles changed out at each play than you are fine. You can also use a fiber needle like a bamboo.

  • Incredible!

  • A "Minton's" cafe in Nishi-Ogikubo! Oh man, you have to tell us where that is (on the map.) What a concept! Best of luck!

  • steel needles? I thought thats how they played 78s back in the day pre 1948

  • I love that! Thanks
