Severn bore at about 10.30 on 22 August 2009. Near Weir Green.

Only a small one, 3*, but media reports of the 'biggest of the year' and on a Saturday in August meant there were crowds watching.

Too many boats and powered paragliders spoiled the atmosphere really. I'll be back next year when there will be bigger bores and less people.

  • Maybe you didn't read your tide tables. The big tides were at night. Saturday night's wave was spectacular in the upper section. The tide in this video was only about 9.5 metres. That's significantly smaller.

Different sections of the river perform differently anyway. On these tides, the wave was better, the further upstream it went. You weren't far enough upstream.

  • I wasn't expecting a big bore, I'm just surprised at all the fuss for a 3*.

  • The fuss was really for the 4* evening tide. But I suppose people are always more likely to turn up to see the day tides. I hope to upload something from the Magnificent Severn fest site, same tide as this one. It was quite a lot better than Minsterworth...why do you surf there by the way..not a great spot.

  • I don't surf there myself, I stick to the sea. I just like watching the bore. Checked out your vids, nice stuff. Seems you might agree that the boats are a nuisence. Look forward to seeing the festival footage.

  • A few floaters I bet you get

  • The night tides on the Mile were pretty spectacular. I've never seen the tide move so fast as Friday night at the corner at the end of the mile...maybe close to 20 knots?

Get in some time on a quieter tide. It's nothing like the way it looks..and who can say no to an endless wave?

Boats...I don't know if you saw the ridiculous craft that came up the river behind the tide on Sunday... looked like a small tug. Ridiculously stupid.

  • Was down at Minsterworth church, the number of people was amazing. Not the biggest, but a good day anyway, managed to see it 3 times that morning

  • It's a good, clear video, but doesn't look like it was the 'best of the year 4* bore' that was suggested.

Glad I didn't get up early to see it this time. :o)
