The East African Community (EAC) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising the five east African countries Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. While generally, the member nations are largely in favor of the East African Federation,[citation needed] informal polls indicate that most Tanzanians (80% of its population) have an unfavorable view. Tanzania has more land than the other EAC nations combined, and some Tanzanians fear landgrabs by the current residents of the other EAC member nations. Land scarcity is a recurring issue in East Africa, particularly in Kenya, where clashes on the Kenyan side of Mount Elgon in 2007 left more than 150 dead and forced at least 60,000 away from their homes.
The first major step in establishing the East African Federation is the customs union in East Africa signed in March 2004 which commenced on 1 January 2005. Under the terms of the treaty, Kenya, the region's largest exporter, will continue to pay duties on its goods entering the other four countries until 2010, based on a declining scale. A common system of tariffs will apply to goods imported from third-party countries.
The EAC was originally founded in 1967, but collapsed in 1977, causing celebrations and wine-toasting in Kenya. It was officially revived on 7 July 2000.EAC is one of the pillars of the African Economic Community. In 2008, the EAC, after negotiations with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) agreed to an expanded free trade area including the member states of all three. In 2010 the EAC launched its own common market aiming to achieve the free movement of goods, labour and capital within the region.

It's simple: There is the East Africa in political turmoil which is the HORN. And then there's the East Africa that is politically stable which is the EAC.

@nedatronics sorry for the redge. i was replying to that dumb. Somalis is no better than anyone and like wise too. am somali and i consider myself east African and proud of it. so since Somalia is located there i was wondering why not. while Burundi etc is part of E.A while its in Central africa?

@somrazy3 Easy bro...i don't think Somalis want to be involved or even become a part of forming an East African Community. Apparently they are better than the rest of East Africa, there is no AIDS and poverty there.

@angrywinds I do believe Somalia and South Sudan will be included in the future

@Yunghamz This is not "East Africa" in geographical sense. There is a difference between East Africa [Geographically] and East African Community [Some of the eastern Africa countries that formed a partnership.] True, there is no East Africa without the Horn of Africa, but there is East African Community without it!!!

@angrywinds Somalia is not, and has never been a part of EAC. EAC is comprised of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda
