PyeongChang, the South Korean bidder for the 2018 Winter Olympics, held the first rehearsal for the final presentation to members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in this southeastern harbor city of South Africa, Sunday.
With the IOC vote to pick the host city only three days away, President Lee Myung-bak, who arrived here a day earlier, attended the rehearsal and will attend another one Monday as part of efforts to support PyeongChang's last-ditch pitch for the 2018 Games.
Lee held a joint strategic meeting with officials from the government, the bid committee and Gangwon Province on how to make the presentation successful, presidential spokesman Park Jeong-ha said.
Participants of the meeting included the committee's Chairman Cho Yang-ho, Korean Olympic Committee Chairman Park Yong-sung, Gangwon Province Governor Choi Moon-soon and former Gangwon Governor Kim Jin-sun.
"Lee called for a thorough preparation to ensure that no mistakes will be made at the final presentation," Lee said. "He told them that sincerity will move heaven and earth."
The final presentation is scheduled to take place five hours before the vote.
At the presentation, Lee will appeal to voters for PyeongChang as a speaker, reaffirming the government's full-pledged support and promoting Korea's vision for winter sports, his aides said.
The South Korean bid is expected to highlight its compact, athlete-friendly environment and its plan to give rise to a new legacy for Asia's winter sports. Asia has previously hosted the Winter Olympics twice, both times in Japan.
PyeongChang is now competing with Germany's Munich and France's Annecy to host the 2018 Winter Games.
The IOC vote will draw hundreds of delegates from the three nations.
Germany had initially planned to send President Christian Wulff on behalf of Chancellor Angela Merkel, but she will be in Durban prior to the vote to urge IOC members to award the 2018 Olympics to Munich.
Merkel already wrote a letter to each of some 100 IOC delegates, in which she stressed that the Olympic bid was a "national affair" for the Germans.
"We want to invite the world to be our guest," she said at the end of the letter.
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon is also heading to Durban for the vote, accompanied by Sports Minister Chantal Jouanno, according to reports.
President Lee's visit to South Africa is part of his 10-day, three-nation African tour, which will also take him to the Democratic Republic of Congo on July 7 and Ethiopia on July 8. It's his first trip to Africa since he took office in early 2008.
