April 3rd, 1974
No audio

Probably the most notorious twister of the infamous "Super Outbreak". On April 3rd & 4th, 148 tornadoes were reported to have touched down in North America (147 in the US, 1 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada).

Great shots of the multiple vortices as they merge into what would become one of the most violent tornadoes of the 20th century.

Side note: the most widely distributed clip of this tornado depicts it with roaring sound and a continuous loop near the end. The audio was added in by someone, most likely for dramatic purposes, and is NOT genuine. In my version, there are no repeated scenes and the film is silent.

  • Oh wow, really? Where'd you hear/read that?

  • Hi AC :), How are you? :)

It's always great to see any new videos that you add up :)

I was taking a look at the picture, that is in the start of this clip, and I believe that there are possibly 2 tornadoes in that photo, and not 1, if you get the chance, look it up again on google and see what you think :)

    Top rating :)

  • Hiya, Willie! I'm good, just had to get the logic board on my computer replaced, that's why there's been a lack of videos lately. How are you?

I definitely see what you mean. I had heard that the Xenia twister was multi-vortex even after the initial little funnels merged (of course that's subject to debate). That photo has a Topeka twister-look to it as well, doesn't it?

  • ...and I looked up her skirt.

  • two "tornado!" vids by sonicbomb. But I found the one your talking about. Damn it really looks more ominous there because of the high quality. Your right.

  • There's also a really hi-def clip at 2:00 of Tornado by sonicbomb. It's reversed left to right and only two seconds long, but it you stop it just right you can make out as many as five vortices.

  • Whoops! Make that Tornadoes The Entity Part 3 at 2:55.

  • This copy of the Boyd film is quite faded. See a better, shorter but higher resolution copy of it at 2:55 of Tornadoes!! The Entity. It was something to see.

  • The pic at 0:01-0:10 is one of four famous stills snapped by Fred Stewart, public info officer at Greene Mem Hosp, from 2nd floor stairwell, looking east as the tornado passed the hosp. destroying homes in Pinecrest Gardens subdiv. NE of downtown. It's moving left to right, notice destruction to right but not to left of the tornado. It had just destroyed the high school a few moments before. A minute later it exited the NE side of town headed for an appt w/Central State U.

  • i live near xenia, and i remember the 1990's tornado, it ripped of the roof of a store my dad wired up i think.

  • Wasn't Xenia just about wiped out by this storm? Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • woah

  • i lived in bluffton indiana and was a kid we were not close enough to see the funnels but the storm was massive that day and the sky was so black
