Introduction to the Gayatri Mantra: Its power and Sadhana

Meaning: "May the Almighty direct our intellect in the right direction".

Gayatri is a form of Mother Laxmi, Mother Saraswati and Mother Kali. She exists as the essential life-force all around us and within us. Many devotees visualize her in the form of a goddess seated on a white swan, or in the form of a rising sun. Both these visualizations represent her characteristic features- destroyer of sin and sorrow, and giver of happiness, prosperity and righteous wisdom. A guitar needs to be tuned in order to give a pleasant sound; similarly, Gayatri mantra tunes our body, mind and soul.

We are entangled in the effects of our Karma, i.e. deeds (which may be both physical and subtle). Our karma bear fruits, either positive or negative, and we get carried in the cycles of birth and death as result of it. "Gayatri" frees us from this cycle, and makes us a "Brahman". A Brahman is one who is happy even amidst limited resources, shares his resources with others, has high levels of morals and sanskara, and has won over his desires/ego/attachment/greed. A Sadhak who recites the Gayatri Mantra with full devotion will have his life progress from the depths of pain and suffering to a height of prosperity, fame and liberation (i.e. realization of one's true form/Atman/soul/Brahman).
Our Gurudev Pandit Shri Ram Sharma Acharya experimented on the power of Gayatri mantra throughout his life, and he proved that Gayatri mantra is genuinely the wish-fulfilling tree or the "Kalpa Briksha" as described in the Vedas. All the blessings of Gayatri mantra fructified in his life. In today's world of pain and suffering, Gayatri mantra is the only best solution to all the problems. However, one has to remember that the Mantra will bear fruit only when it is recited with full devotion; fixing the mind on the rising sun or Mother Gayatri or a lighted candle or Gurudev's picture while reciting the Mantra is an effective way to arouse the devotion.
