A short documentary of our travel to the Tanganda Tea Estate near Chipinge in Zimbabwe, to conduct photosynthesis measurements using a LI-COR LI-6400XT portable photosynthesis system in November 2011. Also included is our visit to the Eastern Highlands Tea Estate.

  • Photosynthesis is the primary process that governs plant growth and ultimately productivity and yield. The photosynthetic measurements were done on various levels inside the plant canopy to determine how shading by the outer leaves influences the “productivity” of the leaves lower down in the canopy. The overall aim was thus to determine whether different harvesting methods influenced light infiltration and ultimately yield. More leaves = more tea…

    But why are photosynthesis measurements required on tea leaves if they are going to be dried anyway?
