The french soprano Gina Cigna gives a powerful, easy and impresive high D in the final scene of Norma's first act. Unique and unforgettable! (MEt 1937)
Cigna 's Norma is very impressive, She was the first to do the role at the Met after Ponselle gave it up and she does a great job of it in an age when Bel Canto Opera was disdained and ignored .She pulls out all the stops and takes some risk. There are flaws in any Norma. Callas had her moments of less than perfection in this role too and her voice was not as big or as beautiful as Gigna's. Is there a complete recording?
Wow! What an exciting performance! Madame Cigna nails the high note at the end. Tonally it is not as pure as could be initially but she never gives up on it and it becomes perfectly pure by the time it is released. Lord! does she ever sing it with that abandon which is electrifying to my ears. Truly Golden Age. Who are her associates here? Is Martinelli the tenor? This made my night!
The high D is attacked in a scooping fashion from below, remains flat for about half its time, then finally she reaches the correct pitch towards the end.
Si l'on nous donnait de nos jours une telle voix, quel rêve ce serait! elle EST Norma, de toutes les façons, son intégrale de 1938 est un réel moment de bonheur musical, ses duos avec Ebe Stignani restent mémorables!
@OPERA3000management That is Norma (Bellini), not Turandot (Puccini)... ;)

Fabulas performance and exciting D....there's more passion and excitement in this short clip than any from those Met sopranos in the last 2 decades.
