RED FLAG is an advanced aerial combat training exercise hosted at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada and Eielson Air Force Base Alaska. Since 1975, air crew from the United States Air Force (USAF) and other U.S. military branches and allies take part in the exercises, each of which is two weeks in duration.

  • What's the point in having a documentary about an *international* exercise when you only show US planes?

  • Well said. I couldn't agree with you more. Statistical data can only tell you so much, when the individual pilot's training can vary so widely from one to another. I tend to believe, that our pilots have the very best training on the planet, because of our edge in technology. At the same time, nothing beats experience. Just ask the pilots of the I.A.F.(Israel).

  • btw, there is a reason why the Aim-9X was developed as well as AESA radar and advanced versions of the AIM-120.

Lets not forget what the British and the IAF are fielding as well (be they a mix of US weapons or their own designs.)

For every new piece of hardware and or tactic there is a counter being developed/fielded (be it high tech or low tech.)

  • While IMHO the F-22 and F-15 are the badest things to ever grace God's blue skies,

It all comes down to training, skill, and how the forces are employed. A well trained adversary in yesterday's tech can give today's tech a run for its money.

If the training and leadership aren't there, then it does not matter what equipment you have...

  • I remember this clip from the Video Report Series on VHS and the "Red Flag" briefings from Top Gun Jets II VHS

Good stuff and thanx for the memories.

  • And you know this how? A dogfight somewhere we haven't been told about? Saying that as fact is as unproven as me saying that the SU-30, in close combat, does not stand a chance against the F-22. Victory is not assured for either. Too many variables to say one A/C would dominate the other in the same class.

  • In close combat the F-16 and F-15 could have not stand a chance against the Mig-29 and SU-27

which were equipped high off-bore sight R-73 HMC, and also infrared search seekers
