This is a preview of the 85-minute beautifully filmed directorial debut by acclaimed French actress Sandrine Bonnaire. The documentary won the International Film Critics Federation Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

The film tells the story of two sisters - Sandrine herself, one of France's most successful actresses and holder of two César awards, and that of her severely autistic sister Sabine. The contrast between these two women's lives could not be more stark - making for compelling if not disquieting viewing. But more central to the film is the disparity between the pre and post-institutionalized Sabine. Images of the youthful vibrant Sabine are interspersed with footage of the Sabine of today - 30kg heavier, sluggish, sometimes drooling, at times violent and frequently distressed.

  • i think she looks beutiful as a young lady and i agree with giacblanc.. and as side note those fucking institution are what did it i myself was a very happy caring strong person before i was horribly abused at those fucking places

  • This makes me FURIOUS. Its easy to become impresses with the beautyful young woman, and apalled by the ghost of a person she later seems to become.

but its more important to remember the thousands of autistic and notherwise disabled or misunderstood people she represents. People who were hid from society, embarassing society for hundres of years.

    Soylent green is people.

  • Sensationalized by comparing the woman to the girl: most "normal" women hit "the wall" pretty hard

  • i wish i could of known her before the institution. maybe i could of helped. she was a beautiful girl :(

  • I agree with Panda dude. They dont even know if the medicines will help so they just keep using them as guinee pigs using the excuse that it will save tons of other lives. Then again we can blame the institution but what in the world was wrong with her parents? Did something happen to them so it was only the sister left? I guess I need to go watch the movie.

  • She was like a moon in the sky

  • So sorry you had to go through this :-( Sending you a big hug.

  • yes the drugs and the supposed "care" as they call it is absolutely horrendous

    &we call us humans intelligent?

we generally are not very good at treating people as humans rather than treating them with mind numbing drugs

i prefer to live with the diverseness of nutcases than to live with vegetables!

and i have friends that are termed chronically mentally ill

    i disagree

we all have different brain processes and everyone needs more counselling rather than diagnosing and drug taking!

    complicated:)

  • The gift of unreason. The mobility and expessivness of Sabine's face far exceeds her sister especially its unpredictability. Sandrinne has tremendous range as an actress, but of course always in character.
