The World Ploughing Championships were held in Slovenia this weekend, where competitors from 30 countries participated in the event. Lets see who came in first in the field.
They did it forwards. They did it backwards. They did it straight. And they did it fast. Well, as fast as a tractor would allow. The contestants in the 2009 world ploughing championships came from around the globe to show off the depth of their furrows on this Slovenian plain. And there were those who came in first in their field - the Austrian, Werner Eider - winner in the Conventional Plough category. [Werner Eider, Winner, Conventional Plough Category]: "Marvelous, all the way to the end. Everything was running perfectly for me to the end." And the Belgian, Roel Cuyvers - winner of the Reversible Plough. [Roel Cuyvers, Winner, Reversible Plough Category]: "I do it (ploughing) for 30 years in my country, in Belgium. And I do it as a hobby." It's not all about the competition, though. With climate change and food production high on the global agenda, the Ploughing Championships serve another purpose: [Hans Spieker, General Secretary, World Ploughing Organization]: "The significance of the world championship is actually to improve the quality of ploughing. Because we know that we produce food in soil and we have to have the best soil conditions for a good food crop." And so, as the competitors from 30 different countries celebrated the annual event, they shared tales of differences in soil consistency and weather conditions in a bid to refine their skills for ploughing excellence.
This was the 56th World Ploughing Contest. Very Well organized by the Slovenian host organisation. In 2010 the World Ploughing Contest is in New Zealand on 17th and 18th April.
