Zulu (1964 - directed and co-written by Cy Endfield), is a historical war film. It is the screen story of a small garrison of British soldiers who defend the mission station of Rorke's Drift following the British defeat at the battle of Isandlwana on the afternoon of January 22, 1879. Stanley Baker (Lt. John Chard), Michael Caine in his first major role, (Lt. Gonville Bromhead), Jack Hawkins (Reverend Otto Witt), James Booth (Pvt. Henry Hook), Nigel Green (Colour Sgt. Frank Bourne), Patrick Magee (Surgeon-Maj. James Henry Reynolds), and Gert van den Bergh (Lt. Josef Adendorff) star as the defenders who thwart off numerous attacks by over 4,000 Zulu warriors.

The opening and closing narration is spoken by Richard Burton.

  • great music for a great movie

  • I actually think Barry was far better than John Williams or Danny Elfman. But thats just me. No arguements please. This is a fine score, its sweeping, majestic, immense, powerful, Imperial and also oddly raw wild and African at the same time. Brilliant movie. RIP Baker and Barry.

  • 20th April 1915 Hill 60 Ypres Belgium 3 VC's won 3

  • @simon8382 Which battle of Hill 60? There was one in both world wars, the first involved an Australian tunneling attack and the second was a repulse of the Royal Scots

  • @zeeman512 It was a holdover from the age of the smoothbore musket (guns that take half a minute to reload and are accurate only to about 100 yards). The bright colour helps units to stand out to the general through all the powder smoke. With the advent of massed breachloading (e.g. the Martinis in the film) or repeating rifles (the lee-enfields and mausers of WWI), machine guns and rapid firing artillery, bright uniforms and packed formations became suicidal, hence the adoption of the khaki.
