PlusNYC Restaurant Chains Post Calorie InfoNYC Restaurant Chains Post Calorie InfoThe Associated PressCustomers at big fast-food chains in New York City are finally facing the facts about their meal choices. And for some, the truth may be hard to swallow. The AP's Ted Shaffrey explains. (July 19)((New York)) Some New Yorkers had a serious case of "calorie shock" on Saturday. "I was like 'Oh my Gosh'The city started enforcing the nation's first-ever law requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts on all menus - leaving some diners to find out their favorite food had hundreds more calories than they had thought. Violating restaurants face fines of up to 2-thousand dollars - it's not clear how many were cited Saturday. Cathy Nonas of the city's health department has high hopes for the new law. ((Cathy Nonas, NYC Department of Health)) "We hope this has a huge impact on obesity, and of course if it has an impact on obesity it will have an impact on diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Some of the calorie counts posted Saturday were very high. ((GRAPHIC OVER VID OF FOOD: 2330 Calories)) At T-G-I Fridays, this appetizer, called a Jack Daniels Sampler has a whopping 2-thousand 330 calories. "We hope the restaurant will be shamed into not offering a 2300 calorie appetizer unless they suggest 10 people share it." ((GRAPHIC OVER VID OF FOOD ON MENU: 1,110 Calories)) If you were hoping to just have a salad for dinner at Fridays, you might want to avoid this one, it's got 1110 calories. ((GRAPHIC OVER VIDEO, 480 Calories, then zoom wide to show drink, superimpose 600 calories over the drink)) At Starbucks this little piece of Banana Nut Coffee Cake has 480 calories, while this Vanilla Bean Frappucinno has 600 calories. ((GRAPHIC: 3,073)) At the popular Italian eatery Sbarro, it turns out the Fettuccini Alfredo with Grilled Chicken has 3,073 calories. "No it wasn't" Fade: "if you want to eat it, you'll eat it, and you'll cut back late on in the day if you eat it for lunch, it can be your "slunch." ((Ted Shaffrey, The Associate Press)) ((New York))

  • Great idea will make more people aware

  • I love NY. These fast food companies resisting posting calories are the SAME as the cigarette companies resisting putting warning logos on their products. Americans are so fat on average it's insane.

  • I can't believe people eat this "food" on a daily basis. I'm glad I don't have to eat food like that anymore. I cant believe that salad had more than 1,000 calories! Just prepare your own food, it's cheaper and healthier. People are just lazy, and don't even care anymore like the ones at 1:48 ... all that food makes me loose my appetite.

  • yuck, I cant believe that salad had more than 1k calories. I'm glad I don't eat out anymore, I don't like the idea of someone els handling my food, and also not knowing what is exactly going into it. Do yourself and your body a favor and prepare your own meals.

  • it does not matter if they post calories on the front door...if you're skinny, lobbyists have paid the chef to cook your food with extra oil. if you are fat, you get special treatment...they make it lean and healthy. so don't let people cook your food if you don't want to be fat.
