My documentary about the Garifuna Culture.

I'd like to Thank everyone for your support. If you would like to know more Garifuna culture you can check out http://Garinet.com

The lack of mention of an African descent is not to deny we have African roots. It simply was not brought up during the interviews because this documentary is not about the people who were taken from Africa, nor is it about the people who already lived in St. Vincent when the slave ships crashed, it is about what resulted in the coming together of these various cultures. As you watch this do not think about what is missing just try to consider what is in front of you. A few people who love their culture trying to give you an idea of what Garifuna means to them. This video was made not to give information from a single source but to encourage viewers to look into this culture for themselves.

Once again, Thank You to all supporters (and some critics).

-Milton Guity

January 2012:
I am now planing to expand this into a feature length project. Click here for more information:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/milguity/i-am-garifuna-a-documentary

You could pledge as little as $1 and you your name will be in the film's credits. The way I see it, whether or not you're Garifuna, why not be apart of something grand.

  • the reality is that there are many people of african descent in latin america look at the coast of colombia from cartagena to buenaventura it's mostly all black also some parts of the coast of mexico has people of african descent also peru nicaragua ecuador and so many others have black folks most people in the us just don't know .......

  • After reading through all of these posts, I'm happy to see some Garifuna proud admit the African aspect of their culture.

Someone mentioned the Garifuna as being descended from the Kallinago. Let me tell you. I've visited the Carib Reserve in Dominica West Indies many times. Yes. They call themselves Kallinago. I can tell you, not one soul in this video looks anything like those Caribs. But every soul in this video looks like the African descendants in the African Diaspora!!!!!

  • The real story is that the Garifuna escaped on the ship, and KILLED their would be slave owners before shipwrecking on St Vincent. This business about all the white people dying in a hurricane or by the shipwreck is a re-write of white history that even many Garifuna believe. How could all the white people on the ship die from hurricane, shipreck, but the slaves, who would have been at the BOTTOM of the ship, shackled together miraculously survive? THINK PEOPLE
