This chicken was wandering around loose in a New York City park the day before Labor Day. Most people stopped to marvel at how strange it was there was a stray chicken there -- but I thought it was a lot more interesting how urban New Yorkers responded to a chicken, so I caught it on tape. How many people would think to pet a chicken? (Well, this one *was* awfully friendly.) Notice also how the dogs run away from the bird. That wouldn't happen on a farm.
The chicken is alive and well and now living with me in Washington Heights, where we have a big fenced in courtyard all to ourselves. We have named it Hamantaschen. We hope it's a girl, because roosters aren't allowed in the city! Chickens are, though -- they count as pets. For more information on keeping a chicken in the city, check out http://thecitychicken.com/ or http://urbanchickens.org/ (they have more information than I do -- if you ask me questions I will refer you to them).
