Lovely busy scene at the Clyde Resort of Largs. Largs is about 33 miles from the City of Glasgow and situated on the Firth of Clyde coast in North Ayrshire. The Gaelic interpretation of the name Largs means 'the slopes'. A popular resort before the advent of package holidays abroad in the 1960's , with the new excitement of taking to the air to reach foreign lands. Most companies closed down around mid July for the fortnight , giving their employees and their families time to breath in the fresh sea air for a week or two after the smog of heavy industry , this became known as taking a boat "Doon the watter for the Fair" , the Trades Fair Fortnight. These Clyde resorts are dependent on warm sunny weather and some people still travel for 'a wee day oot'. When the weather does behave itself , who would spend a fortune flying abroad , at least you can get home at night. The summer sunny warmth was all too brief in 2011 and we hardly got 3 days of settled weather.
I was there this summer
