Every Thanksgiving for about ten years now, I've been deep frying turkeys for Thanksgiving and sometimes Christmas. It's a pretty simple thing to do, but it can go terribly wrong if you don't take precautions. I'm listing some of the precautions for those who come across this video for instruction. Otherwise, it's more for entertainment value. For the folks who decide to fry a turkey, be smart about it.

1. Do it outside, away from the deck or the house.
2. Check the displacement of your turkey. Decks and houses burn down when idiots start with a full pot of oil.
3. Oil expands when it heats, so don't start out with cold oil.
4. Keep the kids, and the grown-up kids away from the fryer, especially if they're running around.
5. Dry the turkey and the pot thoroughly. (hot oil and water = danger)

6. Think ahead, think it through, and take your time. It's a big pot of hot oil, so respect it.

Happy Holidays, and enjoy those fried birds.

  • Forgot to ask, have you got any cooking time per pound weight for the bird.

  • @harmusman they say 3 to 3.5 minutes per pound. It doesn't take long at all.

  • Nice vid Dan, here in the UK turkey time is Xmas and everyone hopes to get it cooked not too dry as we cook in oven, gas or electric. All methods are tried as in cooking on its breast in the oil or covering with bacon and fat but I think I will try this method next time if it is not too cold in the garden next winter.

  • @harmusman We do both baked and fried turkeys in my family. You'll be blown away by how moist the fried turkey comes out. Advantages of baking: house smells like roast turkey, drippings for gravy, and you can stuff the bird
