I've been looking for a better job for a few months now, but I feel a little discouraged because of the discrimination that Muslim women face when looking for employment. I am not trying to discourage any sisters from following their dreams, so please don't think I'm telling you to give up. It's a reality that the job market is tough right now, and only the best are offered jobs(It's also who you know). Wearing hijab can place you at the bottom of the barrel when looking for employment. Your head scarf and your religious beliefs have nothing to do with the skills that you can bring into the workforce. DON"T GIVE UP. I know that if more Muslim women went out into the job market we would be a force that they couldn't deny. If they close the doors to us, we can start our own businesses and help our other Muslim sisters. Insha Allah that day will come soon.

So, i didn't know my way around that well yet. i support anyone that wants to start the business, but in order to start the business you need money. If the banks wont loan it out to you, you must raise the money up yourself. I have seen people recieve grants to help them jump start their business. The first step is to wrote down a solid business plan and stick to it. Insha allah sister, we will both eventually start our careers soon with the guidance of ALLAH!

Believe me, I am still looking for a talent that I can make the spare cash on the side, but I don't have any at the moment. I am so scared to wear my hijab in certain job interviews, because I know how stupid people can be when they see that you are Modest, I dislike taking it off though. Thank you for the advice on how to cover. You know whats funny, I lived in NJ for 6 month! lol! that was before I had my degree. Yes, i saw plenty of jobs online, but I was new to the area.

LOL! I'm glad that another sister feels my struggle.Call center is not for everybody. i refuse to work call centers because people tend to forget their manners over the phone. Marriage isn't going to solve anything for neither, because i'm not ready to get married at the moment. I really wanted to get myself established before I walk down the aisle.

  • I have seriouly thought of starting my own biz, but the initial investment needed to start the biz is difficult for me. I do put my hijab differently when I go on interviews, for example the color, the way I wrap the khimar and I might put on a blazer (open and loose). I am thinking of writing books, doing child care, and setting up a non-profit. By the way, if you don't mind relocating they have many SW jobs in NJ,every time I open the paper I see social work positions. Allah is the provider.

  • Sis, I am right there with you, I am currently looking for a better job . I have my degree, but it seems like I can not find a job in my field or a job that will pay enough to support a decent life style. It's not the economy, and a husband will not solve that problem, might even add to the problem. I going to keep looking, state and government jobs might be easier to get. Call center won't work for me, because my voice is decisively black, and rather scratchy lol.
