We could soon be able to access the internet on our TV screens following a decision by the BBC Trust.
Project Canvas would put catch-up services such as the BBC iPlayer and ITV Player on TV. Plus it could potentially allow viewers to shop and download music on the small screen.
At the moment, only Virgin Media customers can access the iPlayer via their TVs. Or it's possible to watch TV programmes on demand through a computer.
ITV, Five, Channel 4, BT and Talk Talk are also backing the service, which is predicted to cost around £115 million over four years.
But critics have said that public money should not be spent on the venture. Viewers would have to pay around £200 for a set top box and would need broadband to use the service.
The BBC's governing body, the BBC Trust, says that the public value of the proposal justified any potential negative impact.
Ah yeah, I wasn't aware that was the situation, I haven't tried Virgin Media and presumed it was the same setup as BT Vision. Thanks for the clarification =)

iPlayer isn't available on BT Vision, but you can get BBC replay programs. And this story is only about accessing iPlayer through TV sets, so Wii and PS3 etc. don't count.

Your information is wrong, BT Vision users can get iPlayer on TV, as can a few other services
