@AyePrincess Actually if you were outside the immediate blast radius the only issue is extreme burns to any exposed flesh, as stated in the video (this is ignoring radiation, which we are assuming you would run the fuck away from). Covering your neck would have helped if you were outside the immediate blast range, but it's not going to save you if one drops on your head.

Though yeah the radiation would fuck yo' shit up.

The film seemed old even when I first saw it in 1960.This wasn't a brief scare thing; this stuff went on for years. Bert was worried about bombers, but a few years later - Russian thermonuclear tipped missiles were 8 minutes away in Cuba. This film was mostly aimed at potential survivors outside the 3 mile blast zone. Fallout was gonna be the problem for everyone downwind.
