Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, for the Apple II, published by Origin Systems, Inc.

Probably the most recognized game in the series. Has support for one or two Mockingboard sound cards. [Video is running in AppleWin v1.16.1.0 w/ an AE Phasor sound card [which has 12 voices, but Ultima IV only uses 6 in this video, becuase I think it sounds better than the Two Mockingboard mode].

  • hmm.. this is not the ultima iv i remembered. this looks more like a text adventure game with graphics.

  • @knchen That's just the character creation. Skip to 4:57

  • @LordKarnov42 ah, i see it. thanks! brings back fond memories. funny, i don't remember the character creation part at all. how were u able to capture the gameplay so clearly?

  • @knchen If you were playing someone else's copy of the game, there might have already been a save game. Or maybe you spent so long playing the actual game that you just forgot about the five minutes of character creation :-p

I captured the gameplay by playing it on an emulator [AppleWin] and recording the video with... ah... either FRAPS or Camtasia.

I do have an Apple IIe, but I don't have a sound card [yet] and I don't have any way of recording the gameplay/audio from it anyway.

  • @Ainlor89 Graphics maybe, but sound-wise the apple II version kicks ass. And really, it's such an old game, do the graphics really vary that much from todays perspective? I would rather have the nice music.

  • "IN ANOTHER WORLD, IN A TIME TO COME." Sure brings back memories. I found out only this year that this is actually a quote from Paul McCartney's 1982 solo song "Tug of War". And there's two bards called Paul and Linda in the game too. Guess Lord British was a McCartney fan back then.

  • I used to play this late at night in my bedroom back in the 80's. I never completed it. I forget the obstacle that stumped me. I would get to a certain point and just not know what to do anymore. I think it had something to do with a riddle told by a townsperson. Man was I a geek.

  • @LordKarnov... did you ever hear about or play Ultima V: Lazarus? If you haven't--look it up. It's incredible. VERY worth the re-play. :)

I hope someday that the same team re-makes U4...

  • @LordKarnov42 haha.. yeah, you're probably right. i do remember spending many hours just exploring and fighting bad guys. thanks.

  • Wow...! I'm used to play the sega master system's Ultima IV and this one feels much more primitive... Very interesting video! Thanks for the upload.
