@mobilene Someone on the WEWS technical staff must have favored those mics over lavaliers since they were using them long after everyone else. The Morning Exchange used shotgun mics well into the mid-'80s.
@myronfalwell You're half right about ABC being concerned that they'd lose WEWS and WXYZ as affiliates in 1994. FOX tried to get WEWS to come to their network, seeing as how they had just gotten the NFL. Scripps Howard stepped in and prevented that from happening.
@FutureNewsAnchor To wit, then-GM of WEWS Don Perris, who helped create MX in 1972, is credited as one of GMA's creators.
WEWS pre-empted the 8AM hour of GMA until 1994, when a new affiliation agreement between the Scripps-Howard chain and ABC called for the station to carry GMA as a whole. (Remember that in '94, ABC was worried that CBS would make an attempt to affiliate with WEWS and WXYZ/Detroit.)
MX moved to a 9AM start, and that started that show's slow, painful decline.
@FutureNewsAnchor Fox wanted WEWS?

WEWS in those days had RCA TK-27 film chains (they later acquired TK-28's), and TK-44A/B live studio cameras.

@heine71 Yes. In fact, ABC used an episode of "The Morning Exchange" as a de facto pilot episode for "GMA".

Did WEWS black out the 2nd hour of "Good Morning America" for the first hour of "Morning Exchange"?
