First rule - don't get involved.
Second rule - don't have families.
He broke both.

Three weeks ago their best friend, and his CI5 Partner, Ray Doyle - ended up with a bullet in his leg.
She'd lost count of the amount of times both men had walked through the door; bruised and battered. Friends; laughing, joking - playing with the baby that idolised both father, and adopted uncle.
At times there had been worse. A cold, clinical phone-call - a walk down a long corridor, and a hospital waiting room.

This Christmas, she'd decided - no more.
And he'd packed his bag knowing that if he returned, it would be to a house - but no longer a home. For she would not be waiting for him this time.

Finally; job done - badly injured, but recovering - he tracked her down.
And she had realised something that had been staring her in the face.
The blinding fact that life with him would never be easy - but life without him, would be impossible.
Better one Christmas and one New Year with the man she loved - than fifty safe years with anyone else.

The right option may not be the safe one - but it's the only one to take.
