In a time of reconstruction, the end-of-the-80s Expos were in desperate need of great talents to eventually replace aging superstars like Wallach and Raines, who were still great contributors.

The emerging group of warriors like Deshields, Grissom, Alou and presented here Larry Walker would soon form an invincible tribe that would lead us to the heartbreaking strike year of 1994.

Signed as an undrafted free agent by Montreal's scouting genius Jim Fanning in 1984, Walker would from there develop in what you can call a five-tool player. He could hit for average, definitely hit for power, show pretty decent speed, excel defensively and throw beyond hitters expectations.

As a matter of fact, when you found yourself as a hitter hitting a solid single to right field where Larry was you had only two choices 1- run like crazy 2- run like hell 'cause he was known around the league for robbing guys of a single with devastating pitches to first base. His 7 gold glove awards (2 with Montreal) are the best examples of that you can get.

Larry was always a class act with the fans and media and a committed player off the field too. A player loved and admired for more than his playing abilities.

So after failing to make the local teams in junior hockey, our canadian clubber had turned to baseball where he became nothing less than a legend. Destiny you said?

Undoubtebly, he is a true canadian role model and inspiration for everybody, not just kids but also adults who have the dream of reaching the unreachable. All in all, he is a well-deserving hall of famer if you ask me.

So here he is ladies and gents:
Le voltigeur de droite, rightfielder, le numéro 33, number 33, Larry Walker!

Please note that I don't own any of these pics and song's copyrights.

Enjoy.

  • I miss my expos so bad... what a team we had in 1994., then the strike or the ...lock -out. dont forget that the blue jays won in 92 93. worst rating for baseball in the us for those 2 world series. a few owner start shitting in their pants when they saw where the expos where going and started saying no to all the offer from the player association just to make sure that another canadian would go all the way to world series. owners cancelled the season not players.

  • Thanks russellmontreal. You're right on the money with everything you said. And to top things off, you got a government in this province/country willing to move mountains for a hockey team but won't lift a finger for a ballclub and it just makes me sick. And what are the "commissioner" and MLPA doing for small baseball markets like Pittsburgh, KC and Oakland exactly? "Win through your farm system" is a song we know by heart in Montreal and I'm sure they're getting tired of it too over there.

  • So sad to think what could have been....great job on this one too!!!

  • Awesome Video, but also incredibly sad to see how young & dynamic Walker was when with the Expos as it makes you remember how Unbelievably Talented the 1993 & 1994 Expos teams were!!! If there was no strike in 1994 the Expos would have made a deep playoff run which would have had a domino effect resulting in the team being able to keep their best players, including Walker who left after 1994, getting a new downtown stadium & still being the MONTREAL EXPOS today!!! Ah, but life's not fair!!!
