The Electric Power Research Institute is taking a fresh look at "drone" technology. Current research is focusing on the potential for utilities to use these unmanned aerial vehicles to provide more timely and accurate damage assessment in the wake of major storms -- helping utilities deploy crews more efficiently and restore service more quickly.

This video provides a utility-eye view of the challenge and a drones-eye view of terrain, as well as the kind of widespread damage that can result in thousands or millions of outages.
