  • thanks Russ. Just feel I should be spending the £500 on a holiday. I haven't been abroad for 3 years due to my depression. If I could get a job in a gym though, it would pay for itself.

  • @LegalAcademia Weight up your options and do what you feel is best. Becoming a fitness instructor, well, can be done at any time. Colleges aren't going to stop running courses. It depends on whether you feel ready right now or not. Sometimes simply putting a plan into motion, even if it's for a few months away, is enough to give you the "light at the end of the tunnel" feeling and get you to kickstart into action.

  • Thanks for your kind message. My mum has put me off a little - called it dream. I am 29 and have 4 university degrees. I've been funded to do legal research but kept falling ill with depression. I want to be a personal trainer because it gives me an alternative. Recently I've made a mess of myself- got out of exercise. I've got really bad dermatitis on my legs. I also don't play sport any more. More interested in gym of itself for managing health. Do you think this will be a problem?

  • @LegalAcademia Sorry to hear your training's been brought to a halt. With regards to becoming a personal trainer this won't stop you, as all you 'need' is the knowledge inside your head really. If you're not sure, I'd recommend jumping into a gym instructor course first, they are cheaper, shorter & easier than PT courses. That will give you a taste for it, and you can move up from there if you are sure you want to go for it long term (that's what I did).

  • I am doing a YMCA gym instructor level 2 course for £500 at my local college. Started going to gym 7 years ago and always wanted to go into it. Hope it's OK and I haven't been overcharged.

  • @LegalAcademia Hi there. Best of luck with your course. Back when I did my course it was a few hundred pounds through YMCA, just did a check and it looks like you got the current going rate so nothing to worry about there at all. As a fitness enthusiast this is the best move you could possibly have made, too, it's odd being paid for something you actually enjoy doing for a job, as I'm sure you will discover! Gym practical is great, but be sure to nail the theory side too.

  • thanks been to the gym today! :-)

  • @RussHowePTI Ar right thanks :)

  • @ChrisH2K111 A little different from the one I did, although it actually sounds better. It sounds to me like you are going to be undertaking the theory side first of all and then the practical (learining how to run an induction, etc) when you hit the gym.

  • @RussHowePTI Well They said I only do 17 days then get to goto a gym and do an apprenticeship?
