The film is based on the book by William Lindsay White, relating the true story of Dr. Albert Chandler Johnston, a graduate of Rush Medical College whose family passed for white while living in New Hampshire. The characters of Scott Mason Carter (Mel Ferrer) and Marcia Carter (Beatrice Pearson) are fictionalized name changes of the actual subjects.

  • He can.. he just can't be an officer. At that time (early 20's) black people could not be commisioned as officers. Btw, I collect mulatto movies...my mom and I like to watch them lol! She had me buy her the movie called Pinky,it's about a white looking mulatto nurse who graduates from nursing school and decides to tend to her black mother rather than move away and pass as white with her white fiancee.

Yes. It's the 1 drop law of the 1920's. Anyone a 16th black or more was black. Of course, no black person that was 6.25% white was ever accused of being white in the US. That is because it is ridiculous. Silly.
