This field was very weak and she led a long way from home as they were mostly maiden class. Some years are good and others awful as was this year. Her King George win was also very weak as the only opposition was plodder Bruni who had won the 14f St leger as a 3yo. She failed when "tested" but with breeding in mind connections where shrewd in placing her in weak black type events to "market" her future at stud and was rated 10 lengths inferior to Dahlia and most other fillies in that era.
westwayhey - just my hunch, but I'd guess the Wildensteins had more than a little influence in Y S-M's decision. Not unreasonably, there might have been the feeling that Pawneese was a spring-summer filly and Crow had the better chance. That, and Crow was a colt, so an Arc win would be a breeding goldmine. No-one rode Longchamp better than YSM in those days.
She was the most impressive three year old of 76 on her day, and it was a great win in the King George, but she wasn't particularly fancied for some reason in the Arc, and ran disapointingly I thought. Yves Saint-Martin got off her to ride Crow, which seemed slightly odd considering how brilliant she'd been over a mile and a half earlier in the season. I was too young to follow racing in great detail but perhaps she'd already flopped in the Prix Vermille..?
ya a brilliant filly i was young at the time but seem to remember being struck by the length of her tail can't remember a racehorse with a longer tail
I mean she ran a hell of a race, despite being unplaced. Tried to make the running (as usual) & had tough colts like Youth & Crow breathing down her neck all the way. She only gave best inside the final furlong & it was a tremendous effort in the circumstances. Ivanjica, the winner, had the advantage of coming through after sitting well off the pace....

Christ she was a good filly...
Both Oaks (English & French, plus a VERY decent King George field well stuffed)
