ANCHOR:
The list of banned Chinese products in Taiwan keeps growing. Yesterday, the Taiwan government called for a recall on the import and use of all protein powder from Mainland China.
Taiwan's Department of Health conducted random samples of protein powder and found nearly half were contaminated with melamine.
Before the ban, Chinese protein powder accounted for half of Taiwan's total protein imports this year—nearly 393 tons, according to Taiwan News.
The toxic compound melamine falsely boosts protein levels, making the product look more protein-rich than it really is.
Taiwan's health officials say this ban—along with the hold on dairy and ammonium carbonate imports from China—is meant to ensure food safety for consumers.
