@BlightedBaz Ah...Stakes killed them just like bulletts did when they riddled whats his face who came out of the chimney. Also the only reason I say that they were not vamps is because Neville said so himself in the story. Also anyone can come up with their own interpretation of a zombie. What you are refering to are traditional zombies. I don't think Matheson meant to but he inadvertently did before any mention of them before. 1954. Also Haitian zombies can do whatever their commanded.

Hello. If you are reading this then you are very lucky to be alive. Im on the run because my city has been over run by zombies. It has been about 3 weeks now and im staying in a large house that is very nice because who ever lived here was killed already or IS a zombie. Please, if your still alive come find me. @Garrett2027 I'll stick with vampires due to the light sensitivity and the fact that Neville spent a good portion of his time making wooden stakes to kill them. The fact that they were intelligent and could speak certainly rules out that they were zombies in any manner (traditional Haitian or Romero style).
