Dear Friends,

I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year. As I reflect on what we've accomplished together in 2011 and what lies before us in 2012, I feel very blessed to be a San Antonian during this transformational time. This year is ending on a high note. In December, we received two major federal grants to leverage local investments in transportation and education. These investments will pay dividends far into the future as we expand access to mass transit and ensure that more and more young people have access to the kind of early childhood education that will put them on a trajectory to academic success.

San Antonio's strong and diverse local economy continues to draw accolades. In the past two weeks, the Milken Institute ranked San Antonio as the "Best-Performing City" in the nation and Marketwatch placed San Antonio in the Top 10 of "Best Cities for Business." In 2011, the City maintained its AAA bond rating and adopted another balanced budget without a property tax hike. This gives us a strong foundation as we head toward the 2012 bond election. Citizen bond committees have finished their work. And now it is up to the City Council to finalize the list of projects in a transparent, public manner before we ask for voter approval in May 2012.

After a very good year, I believe we are poised for an even greater 2012 and are ever closer to realizing the bold community vision that guides the SA2020 effort.

Sincerely,

Mayor Julián Castro
