The Member For Melbourne (Lindsay Tanner) is Named — and banned from the House for 24 hours — for failing to withdraw an "offensive, unparliamentary remark" he makes (which we don't hear in this footage as Julie Bishop waffles on about schools), as featured on the night's news. The remark was calling John Howard a liar and has become the subject of the Speaker's impartiality as Government MPs have been let off for calling Opposition MPs liars.

There appears to be no evidence on the Hansard as to what the "unparliamentary remark" was, which occurred at 2.34pm on September 19, but it was reported on the news Mr Tanner said something to the effect that John Howard was a liar.

  • I'm going to miss Tanner...

  • happytreefriendsfan9 Yeah, what was that electorate thinking, who were they voting for? Didn't they realise a vote for the Greens was a vote for Labor? I hope they stand up and revolt and have a by-election to throw out this new Labor-supporting greenie idiot. I mean what was the point, they may as well voted Labor anyway!!!

  • @CanberraUser You do know that Tanner resigned before the election... right?

  • Happytreefriendsfan9: Whoever was standing for the Labor candidate was. Sorry, what I meant why did that electorate vote for the Greens instead of Labor......

  • David Hawker is the best speaker australia has ever had!

  • I liked Neil Andrew even more!

  • Or I'll deal with'em lolol he don't play no games straight up G.

  • Am confused: if the speaker declares the ayes have it, why is the division called. In UK division is only called when the speaker cannot decide. In the Irish Parliament the speaker can throw out/suspend any member without any vote!!

  • @CanberraUser Just be thankful it was a Greenie and not some twat from Family First like what happened in the 2007 election.

  • @CanberraUser Because we believe in what the Greens stand for, thats why.

Cath Bowtell was the Labor candidate.

If you want a list of reason why we're different from Labor, I'd be more than happy to have a chat, and a friendly one, might I add. =)

  • @CanberraUser Well one thing's for sure, Melbourne constituents thought there was some diffirentiation between the Greens and Labor. Mind you, I don't live in Melbourne and I'm guessing that you don't live in it either but the Greens thought they had a chance to win Melbourne so they campaigned hard against Labor only in that seat. Genuinley, Melbourne constituents saw two very diffirent parties. But as you say - there's not much diffirence on a federal level.

  • Thats Tony Abott ( Current Leader Of The oposition) Who Asks To Suspendid The Member For Melbourne

  • Iove at :18 "the member for melbourne will resume her seat" then a high pitched "what!'
