The PS22 Chorus of 2006 does an incredible version of "Strawberry Fields" which we used for our original musical, "Sandy Ground -- Flowers of the Sand." The play was about the original settlers of Staten Island's Sandy Ground, which was the first successful African-American community in America. They made their living oystering and growing strawberries. We dedicate this song to Lois A.H. Mosley, a descendent of the Sandy Ground community, who unfortunately passed away this past year. She was an incredible woman, whose numerous accomplishments include a wonderful family, and a book she authored titled "Sandy Ground Memories".

The song was written by the Beatles, originally for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band in 1967, and instead first appeared as an alternate A-side on the flipside of the "Penny Lane" single. Although the song only reached #8 on the Billboard Charts, it is in my opinion better than most of their #1 singles! Right now the chorus of 2009 is hard at work on it's cover of "Across the Universe", another brilliant Beatles song. Something to look forward to indeed.

So thank you again to Lois A.H. Mosley for being part of PS22 Chorus history and, more significantly, being an important part of American history. Though you are missed, your light continues to shine through all who were blessed to know you.

  • Wow. What a wonderful school project. So did the kids also help write the musical?

  • @hardinmichael1981 yes indeed. :)

  • One more question: why do you only perform pop music? Do they learn any standards? Thanks, I know I asked a lot of questions :o)

  • @musicchick581 the kids do break away from pop music. (spirituals, holiday traditionals, patriotic, gospel, Disney, heavy metal, etc.) i think approaching pop music in chorus is extremely appropriate for kids who are new to the choral experience. it gets them interested and motivated to sing music they can relate to, and at the same time teaches all the same concepts of ear training, blending, dynamics, creative expression, and the list goes on.....

  • Mr. B do u have any otther videos from the 06 chorus ?

  • yup, do a search for ps22 2006 or 2005 and stuff should come up. :)

  • I will never B the same after watching all of the vids of the kids! Their teacher should get a pay raise instead of a pay cut! I get tired of hearing about all of the problems the teachers have of getting money they need to buy supplies in the school for OUR children's future. And here we have a young man who took it upon himself to teach these kids not only music but much more than music that they will take with them the rest of their lives. I applaud him!

  • i wish this man had been my choir teacher!! this is absolutly amazing. i am more amazed with every video i watch!!!

  • Pouvez me passer les scores?

  • beautiful!

  • @agreggofsociety - It is the perfect choice of music (and will one day be THEIR standard) - I can see it in the looks on their faces, the love they reflect, and depth of the soul they exude. You have seen to it that all of the songs have an inspiring message for the children, and you have planted the seeds of love and brotherhood in their seeking minds. You have given them a gift they are yet too young to even comprehend, but it will positively impact their own lives forever.

  • so beautiful, you can feel the incredible depth of their emotions when these kids sing, Mr. B is extremely suited and gifted to be able to pull out such emotion from these young kids; they are doing exactly what they should be doing

  • OMG this melts my heart! I really hope these kids go far with their talents you should be super proud. This is why I want to be a teacher to inspire students to persure their dreams.

  • John Lennon would have loved this. Strawberry Fields was a Salvation Army Home for orphans. When he was young, he would jump over the fence and go play with the children there.

  • This isn't on Sgt. Pepper

  • Son unos ángeles!! Que maravilla!!

Gracias PS22, congratulations!! :D from Peru, Rosa

  • John would be SO proud! RIP John & George...

  • Goodness... this is amazing. This a difficult song to sing. What a beautiful job!!!
