This will help him realise he is safe and does not need to defend himself from you. Offer him treats (grated cheese works well in small amounts). Also, once he has had time to associate you with food and treats he will know you're not a threat and become more tame as the weeks go on. If it's possible (and if not doing so already) on a daily basis, change his water and clean the leftover food from his cage with him in there and he will get used to you being in his environment. I hope this helps.

Hey, if you want my advice (I have dealt with a lot of aggressive lizards), I would replace the huge gloves for some thin, cotton gardening gloves first of all as he will see these as a threat whichever way they approach him. Next, give him a towel and place it in front of him with your scent on it, so he familiarises your smell with no dangers and give him time to get used to it then introduce him to the gloves. slowly pick him up under the front legs and support him.

@theiglady i stuck greens and fruit in my iggies mouth when he kept trying to bite me, it also made him stop! he still tries to bite me every time he comes out, but as soon as he gets that food in his mouth he munches it down doesnt do it again.

this is such a great idea! It sounds silly, but I put greens in my ig's mouth wen he opens it like that. It seems counterintuitive, but it's a reaction he doesn't expect and it's actually taught him to stop.

@chesleycareystar thanks for the advice :)
im starting to see some small changes in his behavior since i posted that comment. things like eating out of my hand and less wiping me with his tail. patients is definitely the key haha. again, thanks :)

@emoboywill just be patient, let him/her stress and always spend time with your iguana, its the same thing with Green Basilisks (Iguanidae), Water Dragons and Sail tailed Dragon (Agamids)

i bought my red iguana about 3 days ago. hes a baby and is only about 8 or 9 inches long from the tip of his head to the end of his tail. when i go to pick him up out of his cage he jumps, climbs, runs, anything to get away from me, but after around 5 or 10 mins of holding him he calms down. but then as soon as i put in back he runs and hides like nothing ever happened. i don't know if im making any progress in getting him to be tame :P

hey at what age do iguana stop jumping?????? i try n grab mine but it jumo

Neither of my igs ever bit, one used to whip but he's stopped that unless he's REALLY pissed off. Biting is usually a last resort for them, good job on taming him he definitely looks like he was a handful haha

dexter is a wiered name i got 2 n named them cheech n chong ahaha
Let him know your not the enemy if possible try not to be above him when u pick him up he will feel like ur trying to hurt him if u make urself seem way larger than him he needs to get used to your smell also if u hold him be sure to support his back and front legs don't let any of them dangle he needs to feel that his body is supported otherwise he will be uncomfortable and not like being held. One last thing u probably shouldn't leave the door open his body temp could drop if he gets cold

Same with the tail whipping he needs to get used to ur hands being on him alot put a glove on that he can't bite through and just pick him up with no fear let him know u won't hurt him and that u are not a threat :)

Yeah he is much tamer now all u have to do is find a glove that will not harm him and keep rubbing him preferably closer to the mouth when he sees that biting it or nipping at it doesn't affect it he won't see it as a threat no longer and accept ur hand on his body he just needs to get used to you
