@1122ares You're welcome :)

@kibo3232 I agree. Thanks for helping me understand Atheism better! Nice talking with you about this, it's very interesting.
-
@1122ares If we rely on proof, and religion is based on assumptions without proof, we don't follow a religion. We have good(realistic) reasons to reject human interpretations about god or gods, or the concept of divinity altogether.
-
@kibo3232 fit very well to describe, and provides misconceptions about what Atheism really is.
-
@kibo3232 Exactly. I agree with EVERYTHING you said. However, since religion means belief, without proof, in a higher power, or entity, which governs the universe, and assumptions about morality derived by that belief, you're saying Atheists have a religion. They do. That's what you described below. However, theism is religion, and the prefix "A" makes it mean "irreligion". So since Atheists are much more than simply "lacking a religion" which everyone thinks, the term Atheist does not
-
@1122ares By religion we mean belief, without proof, in a higher power, or entity, which governs the universe, and assumptions about morality derived by that belief. We atheists believe in a set of physical laws governing the universe, but only after we find sufficient evidence to support it, and we acquire moral rules based on observation and rationality, and we reject any observation which isn't supported by evidence. That's how i perceive the difference anyway.

Religion is more about beliefs, values, and thoughts, not necessarily concerning God (or a lack-there-of). I think agnostic is an appropriate term, but Atheism sounds like the lack of any religious beliefs, and everyone has a "religion", even if they believe there is no higher power or afterlife.

i'm an atheist and also adopted, ha.......not by catholic fundies though.......

I called myself agnostic during my teen years because I thought the word atheist meant you knew there was no god, and I thought that was arrogant. Watching videos like this on youtube have taught be better than that and they have inspired me to be more open about my non belief. I used to feel a chill come up my spine when the topic turned to religion because I was deathly afraid to speak my mind on the subject. Now I know I'm not alone and I know how to argue my case much better.
Whilst I agree that not everyone who is an atheist necessarily knows they are an atheist I can't say I agree with your other statement that everyone in the US understands what it is to be a Christian.
I've always found US "Christians" weird. If Jesus did exist, and he was ever to appear to the US, I'm sure he'd be as puzzled as me.

@kandtell I guess I might be able to agree with that. Though, given the culture, I find it highly unlikely to be the case.
