"Cream Soda Rag"

Jaime Cardenas

2007

Jaime Cardenas is a fine ragtime composer who lives in Texas.

I particularly enjoyed the fresh, bright, and optimistic sound of this rag and
I think it fits this piano quite well (at least, the piano as it sounds now).
This rag is also fun to play.

This video is "take 2" (take 1 wasn't good enough, so I did another one). I use the mandolin attachment (original to the piano) here and there in the video, and I think it helps add another dimension to my playing, to compensate for lack of technique.
As usual, I apologize for all wrong or missed notes.
I really get into the last theme, it makes for a great ride-out to get hot on!

For the sheet music, please buy it from the Authentic Ragtime Company:

OR ask Jaime about it when you see him at a ragtime festival. Thanks Jaime for the great music, and keep writing it!

  • Looks like an old player. maybe gutted ? is it not?

  • It's not gutted... it's a Straube "Hammond" player piano from 1915. It has a Standard player action that I'm rebuilding as time permits. When it's playing again I'll post some videos here. Thanks!

  • You sir, are the man! Thank you so much for recording this video! I like what you did to the last theme! Keep up the great work!

I'll be linking this video from the Authentic Ragtime website.

There is another tune I want you to try. If interested, please let me know.

    Jaime Cardenas.

  • Thanks! I'm definitely interested in this other tune. Please send it over!

I'll try it out for sure... though it make take a while before it gets on Youtube because I practice the heck out of stuff before putting it up here (I'm not a very clean player, and I don't want to look like a fool you know).

  • Does This Piano Have The Drop Metal Tacks? (I Dont Know If That's The Correct Term) But They Are Little Mettle Tabs That Drop In Front Of The Hammers To Give It A Very Right Sound,

  • mandolin attachments are needed for ragtime. thanks you for sharing your great playing. :)

  • Great! We have a 1927 Straube "sawed off" upright here.. not as tall as yours... I think it was one of their "overstrung" pianos.

  • Great Video ! Great Sound ! Thanks.
