On September 6, 2008, the Starr-Gennett Foundation inducted 10 new artists into the Walk of Fame in Richmond, Indiana.
The Starr Piano Company started in Richmond, Indiana in 1872 as the Trayser Piano Company. After several re-organizations, in 1893 it was incorporated as Starr Piano. In 1915, Starr Piano entered the growing market for phonographs and records. Starr's recording division, most commonly called Gennett Records, issued commercial recordings until 1934, and in just 20 years, the company had released recordings by some of the most important pioneers in American popular music history.
The Gennett Walk of Fame will help interpret the Starr Piano Company and Gennett Records Historic Site. The "walk" is located along South 1st Street in Richmond, Indiana, at the site of the Starr Piano Company and embedded in the Whitewater Gorge Trail, which connects to the longer Cardinal Greenway Trail. Both trails are part of the American Discovery Trail, the only coast-to-coast non-motorized recreational trail.
Music - "Honeybunch" recorded by inductee Fletcher Henderson on March 29, 1926.
Medallions designed and created by Wilson Tile of Omaha, Nebraska.
Brochure cover design by Michele Walker of Richmond, Indiana
Artist rendering of completed walk by Mark Meagher of Nashville, Tennessee
