The United States have about 300 million inhabitants, if you look at the average amount of medals per inhabitant the statistics look much diffend, to illustrate: Holland, Belgium, Germany, The United Kingdom and France have 225 million inhabitant in total, but they still had 147 medals in the Beijing Olympics where the United States only had 110 with a third more people.
