Brendan Nelson's apology to the 'stolen generations'

".. in saying we are sorry - and deeply so - we remind ourselves that each generation lives in ignorance of the long term consequences of its decisions and actions. Even when motivated by inherent humanity and decency to reach out to the dispossessed in extreme adversity, our actions can have unintended outcomes. As such, many decent Australians are hurt by accusations of theft in relation to their good intentions. In offering this apology, let us not create one injustice in our attempt to address another. Separation was then, and remains today, a painful but necessary part of public policy in the protection of children. Our restitution for this lies in our determination to address today's injustices, learning from what was done and healing those who suffered."

  • Its disgusting to see how so many people easily misinterpreted what Dr Nelson said. Regardless of what your thoughts on him are, he stated THERE IS NO COMPENSATION, not we wont let you have compensation. Totally different. No money can make anyone feel better about what happened. But the fact remains that people just did what they thought was right at the time and that was to protect children living in the most repulsive conditions.

  • That's right, the authorities did what they thought was right, and in the majority of cases, it was! The children who were removed were given a chance at life they would not otherwise have had, and many of them would be dead now if they had been left in the circumstances they were in.
