You mention being behind in techs when in comes time for battles with other empires. Do you not want to trade with them to get what you need beforehand?

This is what makes playing the small game more difficult. I would need to have friendly terms with my neighbours to accomplish that which isn't going to happen here with the mix of races. My only chance would be to become friends with the Atuuks who don't hate me as much as the other do.

For me in this game my best option is to focus on production and then try and swamp them with numbers.

A question came up for me while watching. If I take ship design in my own hands and design my own ships, will the AI still take care of designing the more mundane things like the passenger ships and freighters, keeping their engines and generators up to par for example?

    - It can be challenging- since you are insectoid/hive it makes it harder to make some friends. You do have room in your backyard since you are cornering to build up and try to maybe make something that looks like an ally. Then unleash on one of the others. That strategy has allowed me to sweep the map on one occasion.

Keep doing the lets play videos- I seem to glean a tidbit or idea I never thought of.

i cant see the point behind escorts and frigates, they die too fast. what i do when i start is i design and build a destroyer class maxed out for space combat and they have 1 troop capacity. with the retrofits, i maintain a good space force that can turn away anything. expensive, but just 3 is enough to kill a pirate base, even if a ship is defending. i go throughout the early game without losing any, until i start attacking heavy fortifications, but i have cruisers at that point.
